Late in 1958, members of several congregations in town began to discuss the possibility of establishing a congregation in West Lubbock. The desirability for such
a congregation had increased considerably
following the establishment of Lubbock
Christian College. The creation of the college
was a powerful impetus to the growth
of the Northwest section of the city. On
December 30, 1958, about 35 Christians in
the area began meeting in homes to coordinate
the thinking of all that would be
involved in any efforts to plan for a
new congregation. Several men instrumental in the
development of the congregation were F.W.
Mattox, Dr. Herman Wilson and Paul Sherrod.
On Sunday. March 1 . 1959, the first worship
service of the congregation was held in the garage
of Bill Turner. At that initial worship service there
were 62 present. On May 3 of that year, the church
met for the first time in the auditorium of Lubbock
Christian College. That auditorium location is now
the current library on the campus. In December
1960, the church bought 4.67 acres from the college
to become the site of its permanent home.
The first unit to be built on the land was the
educational building which currently houses the
offices and several classrooms. To the members of
the congregation, this was a “marvelous” building
which also housed the lower grades of Lubbock
Christian School. It was completed in 1963.
Worship services continued to be held at Lubbock Christian College
until an auditorium was built.
The first worship service in the new
700-seat building was held in 1967. The new
building, located west of the first building,
allowed additional classroom space in addition
to an area for worship.
The present auditorium was built in 1978, and additional classroom facilities were completed in 2001. The congregation has grown from that initial group of 35 to over 1400.
From the first contribution of $262.85, the ability of the congregation has grown to a present budget of over $21,000 per week.
The congregation has always been mission minded, and in 1968 added the first full-time missionary for the congregation. Since then, Green Lawn has worked with 13 missionaries or mission areas spanning the globe in such places as Germany, Italy, Africa, Mexico, and several state-side efforts. In more recent years the church has focused its efforts in Chihuahua, Mexico in order to give more of an opportunity for the Green Lawn congregation to be personally involved in mission work.
The church has maintained a very active presence in the community through its personal work, visitation and benevolent works. From the first single building, the congregation has increased its efforts, housing a benevolent work in the old "bus barn" on the back corner of the property. Ministry to children, youth, families, Senior Saints, singles, and other groups have helped people grow in their walk with the Lord with their particular life stages in mind. A very active Healing Ministry has sought to help people recover from addictions, losses of a loved ones, and the pain of divorce.
Ultimately, the Green Lawn church has always been about accomplishing God's mission for the world: seeking and saving those lost from God; making disciples in the modern world; honoring and glorifying God in all we say and do. The almost 50 years of the Green Lawn church has been rich in heritage and faith. God willing, the next 50 will be an exciting time of pressing on even further to the goal before us.
